I often get asked where my skin comes from, or where my shape is from. More often I get asked where an outfit I'm wearing in an ad is from, or the jewelry. I never have any problem answering those questions.
Going through notecards, I find one of those, send back the reply that the skin is from Adam n Eve, Pandora tone 3 (on the particular ad they referenced) and the shape is mine and it's not for sale.
And I get a reply back "I'm glad your shape isn't for sale."
Okay, so I know I'm not all that to look at, but wow. I ask them (only half jokingly) "Why, is it that bad?"
Turns out, this person has been hired to duplicate the shape on the Gloxinia Ad. Me. My shape. I started out as Ruth, just like everyone did back when there was no other pre-made options with prim hair or CSI fabulous shoes and designer clothes. I had that purple sweater, that fugly pair of jeans and those hideous flip flop things. The hair, we won't even discuss.
This person won't tell me who hired them to do this. I understand using someone or something for inspiration. Like taking J-Lo and making an avie look like her. It's going to be similar, but an avatar can only look so much like a real person. I often use pictures to create a style. Again, prims only look so much like hair. But to take an avatar and duplicate it? You can make an identical avatar, it's the same medium.
I'm just really bothered that someone would pay someone else to create me. And even more bothered that said person is accepting payment and taking the job to create me. And then has the nerve to ask me about it, including asking me how tall my avie is, and then making a comment that they would "never make those breasts." Which obviously shows they're obviously doing this at their customer's request and not because they personally like it.
Where's Swirly when you need her? I wanna be able to say "Darlings you will never be able to recreate such perfection, so don't waste your time. And have another hot dog, you look like you could use one."

I think its weird... I think you should create your own look but it seems people would rather copy a look ... I once had this guy really get quite aggressive about finding out everything about my look.. i was a little scurred lol. I told him skin, tatts, hair and when i said no to shape he ws quite the loon.
I don't know i think shapes is a bit of a step to far .. skin sure , jewelry and stuff but shape is not right.
Oh my gosh, weird is right. I think you are super nice for even telling people your skin. The request you got was super rude and offensive. There are only so many skins and so many shapes and therefore a limited number of combinations of things we can use to get a "unique" look in SL. That person was trying to steal your digital DNA - the nerve!
(moire georgette here, just for the record)

i never had a problem telling people about stuff i wear, but i'm seriously rethinking that. thankfully i'm not that popular, but this is getting more and more scary everyday. just ask aradia dielli or mariya nesiote about how far some people can go - there's this girl who was asking for everything they wear, stealing pictures from ara's blog, taking pictures of them and display like her own, and even having the nerve to tell people it was ara and mariya who stole her pictures!
That is just awful darling! You know it has always been one of Swirly's greatest fears that her shape will be stolen, which is why she keeps it in a bulletproof vault with security guards posted outside. One really cannot be too careful these days dear.
Never fear though darling, it is unlikely that anybody unscrupulous enough to accept money to copy your shape would actually have the talent to pull it off. Talented people don't need to make a living stealing from others.

I never understand why people want to copy. Why not try the skin on their own shape first and see if it looks fabulous on them? Both Tiger and I wear Pandora and I think we both look great in it and yet we don't look like each other, who wants to be a clone? Even with a premade shape I'd want to develop my own look.
If it isn't as simple, and as sick, as wanting to look exactly like you (or anyone else)- I hate to say it but they might be planning on featuring a look-a-like in ads to make it appear as though you are endorsing their product.
A totally illegal concept of course
It's disturbing. I had someone awhile ago sneak up on me when they thought I was AFK and snap pics...then they "snuck off" and shortly after IM'ed me randomly asking for my shape, not mentioning the fact they were just taking snapshots. Uh no...not happening.
And as mentioned, you have the people who will ask about skin or hair, but some keep going on and on asking about every single aspect. Get some individuality, people.

Wow, that sounds a bit stalkerish to me.
I had a girl about a year ago who would frequent my store, where I would often be working, check out what I was wearing and ask about it, and then go and buy the exact same thing and start going around with it. That bothered me enough, and she didn't even have my shape. I would be horrified to see a clone of myself walking around. I never use shapes you can buy, and would be royally peeved if someone knocked off my look.
On another note, however, I have to say, the first time I saw your avie in an ad, Tigerlily, I went "omg, she's so pretty, how did she get a face like that?" Didn't inspire me to go try to copy it, but did invoke some envy ^_^ I'm sure others have had similar reactions, and I suppose not everyone has integrity. Sorry to hear this is happening to you, and hope the person never manages to figure out how you did it!
